Embarking on a mission to address the pressing need for accessible, healthy, and culturally appropriate food, Hannan Healthy Foods has become a beacon of inspiration in nurturing communities. Founded by Mohammed Hannan upon his arrival in Massachusetts, this family farm not only cultivates organic produce but also fosters a deep connection between nature, food, and the diverse communities of Eastern Massachusetts.

Mohammed's journey began with a shared challenge among immigrants - the scarcity of culturally appropriate, fresh, and organic produce. Driven by the conviction that everyone has a fundamental right to healthy food, Mohammed joined the New Entry Sustainable Farming Project’s (New Entry) Incubator Farm Training Program between 2018 and 2021 and launched Hannan Healthy Foods. The New Entry program was founded in 1998 and is part of the Tufts University Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy.  New Entry helps individuals like Mohammed interested in starting a farm business through a comprehensive farmer training program, access to land on its 20-acre Certified Organic incubator farm in Beverly, MA, and by providing marketing and business technical support services as they launch and grow their operations.  Mohammed joined the New Entry program and built his farm operation with a mission to grow affordable vegetables through sustainable organic farming

Supported by his family, Mohammed's commitment has propelled Hannan Healthy Foods to new heights. Their efforts to grow and sell award-winning produce at affordable prices extend beyond the farm's 10 acres in Lincoln, MA. The farm's markets have evolved significantly over the last six years with a vision to offer a diverse array of over 60 vegetables, fruits, and herbs. In addition to partnering with New Entry's Food Hub, they now provide a CSA program for families in Cambridge and operate a farm stand in Lincoln, MA.

Mohammed acknowledges that the missing link for success lies in figuring out how to cover health insurance and secure funding to scale up operations, which would enable him to farm full-time and explore new market opportunities. Recognizing the importance of community service, Mohammed's dedication extends beyond producing top-quality produce. Collaborating with non-profit organizations and engaging with cities and towns, Hannan Healthy Foods is committed to serving communities dealing with food insecurity and fighting environmental justice issues. Mohammed actively networks and mentors fellow farmers, sharing insights to overcome challenges and access support programs.

To remain responsive to customer and community needs, Hannan Healthy Foods embraces organic practices and grows culturally appropriate crops, meeting the high demand within Boston's diverse communities. From Southeast Asian varieties to the lesser-known Molokhia or Mulukhiya, commonly known as Egyptian Spinach, this family farm adds a flavorful touch to Middle Eastern, East African, and North African cuisines. Mohammed's unique CSA Work Share Opportunity also invites individuals to connect with nature, learn about organic farming, and contribute in exchange for a share. Discounts through a farm freedom share program further enhance community engagement.

In response to changing markets, Hannan Healthy Foods has adopted innovative strategies. While logistical challenges deter participation in farmers' markets, the farm stand and CSA shares provide direct access to their produce. Future marketing plans include an online store for broader accessibility.

To experience the freshness and vibrancy of Hannan Healthy Foods, visit their farm stand on Saturdays from 11 am to 6 pm at Umbrello Field, Lincoln (Opposite 275 S Great Road). Discover more about their mission, offerings, and community initiatives at www.hannanagrofarms.com. In nurturing communities through affordability, health, and cultural richness, Hannan Healthy Foods stands as a testament to the transformative power of sustainable and community-focused agriculture.

Raised on a family farm in Bangladesh, Mohammed Hannan moved to the US with his family a little over ten years ago. Mohammed says his familiarity with traditional farming practices came from growing up on a small family farm, and he later learned how to use modern tools and techniques when he became part of the New Entry Incubator Farm Training program. When he’s not farming, you can find Mohammed at his full-time job at Harvard Medical School. Perhaps this is why he takes his farm’s motto from Hippocrates – “Let thy food be thy medicine and thy medicine be thy food.”
